Statistical Modeling of F0 and Timing of Swiss German Dialects

چکیده
This study examines the timing and fundamental frequency behavior of 40 Swiss German speakers from four different dialect regions. Prosodic behavior of each dialect is analyzed using statistical tests against the backdrop of detecting dialectspecific patterns as well as cross-dialectal differences. We find that variation in F0 as well as in timing is vast across the dialects, with one of the dialects, the Southwestern Alpine variety, exhibiting particularly salient F0 and timing features. The results confirm earlier impressionistic observations on this unexplored topic of Swiss German prosody.

Declarative sentence intonation patterns in 8 swiss German dialects
This study examines declarative sentence intonation contours in 8 vastly different Swiss German dialects by the application of the Command-Response model. Fundamental frequency patterns of a controlled declarative sentence are analyzed on the global and local level of intonation. The results provide evidence of a different patterning for the dialects in the context of how global and local level...
متن کاملCompilation of a Swiss German Dialect Corpus and its Application to PoS Tagging
Swiss German is a dialect continuum whose dialects are very different from Standard German, the official language of the German part of Switzerland. However, dealing with Swiss German in natural language processing, usually the detour through Standard German is taken. As writing in Swiss German has become more and more popular in recent years, we would like to provide data to serve as a steppin...
متن کاملAnalysis of voice fundamental frequency contours of continuing and terminating prosodic phrases in four swiss German dialects
In the present study, the F0 contours of continuing and terminating prosodic phrases of 4 Swiss German dialects are analyzed by means of the command-response model. In every model parameter, the two prosodic phrase types show significant differences: continuing prosodic phrases indicate higher phrase command magnitude and shorter durations. Locally, they demonstrate more distinct accent command...
متن کاملMachine Translation of Low-Resource Spoken Dialects: Strategies for Normalizing Swiss German
The goal of this work is to design a machine translation system for a low-resource family of dialects, collectively known as Swiss German. We list the parallel resources that we collected, and present three strategies for normalizing Swiss German input in order to address the regional and spelling diversity. We show that character-based neural MT is the best solution for text normalization and ...
متن کاملR in Swiss German Dialects
Speech rhythm can be measured acoustically in terms of durational characteristics of consonantal and vocalic intervals. The present paper investigated how acoustically measurable rhythm varies across dialects of Swiss German. Rhythmic measurements (%V, ∆C, ∆V, varcoC, varcoV, rPVI-C, nPVIC, nPVI-V) were carried out on four sentences of six speakers from eight Swiss dialects. Results indicate th...
